Theater Conservatory or Liberal Arts School?

By Acai Lean | Jul 29, 2010

My situation is as follows. I am a senior in high school, very interested in acting, I have participated in Vassar College’s Powerhouse apprentice company, as well as high school productions. I am confident I want to be involved with the theater, and movies for my whole life, and as a career, but I am not sure as what to do about college. I really want to be involved with a great theater program, but I don’t know if I want a conservatory. I still want an education not just in theater. I definitely don’t want to just act, so many conservatory programs are throwing me off. One last thing, I am not great at standardized tests, (SAT, APs etc. ) that is why I am leaning towards a conservatory program, where the audition is weighted more or equal to the academic part of the college application. Please let me know your opinions. Thank You very much!!

Go for a BFA. Your classes are heavily weighted on the theater side, but you still have the opportunity to take liberal arts classes and minor (even sometimes major) in another subject. Syracuse and NYU both have great programs like this.

It’s really up to you. I was just talking to a working actor (national commercials currently) who’s undergraduate degree was in Psychology. So, it seems if you can do the work well, you’ll get work regardless of your college experience. I say, definitely earn a degree, but don’t stress over where or how. If you want to earn a degree at a Conservatory, and will be happier with that more traditional learning system, then do so.
